Private tutor in Sand Springs, OK

Education

Pre-med/Biology, and Bible and Theology/Pre-seminary double major at Asbury University. Currently: psychology major at Liberty University.

Experience

Educational interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing in KY school systems for nine years. Taught grades K-12 at private school: math (2nd, 7th), English (7th, 8th), Bible (2nd), American Sign Language (K-12), Drama (K-12), Latin (4th - 8th) Piano and flute instructor for ten years. Currently a special education assistant teacher in the Tulsa Public Schools. I enjoy tutoring and working one on one with students -- it is a joy to see a student comprehend and truly understand a concept that may have been previously difficult for them. I believe in meeting a student where they are, mobilizing their primary learning style, and offering a number of explanations or perspectives to learn a concept until it "clicks" in the student's mind. I believe creative teaching is most effective.

Hobbies

I am very laid back, but focused when it comes to education. I have been told I have high expectations of my students -- which I do: I believe anyone can accomplish anything they set their mind to accomplish. Generating or feeding a want to learn combined with speaking the student's primary learning language is the key to academic success. During my personal time, I love spending time with my husband and two boys. I also enjoy playing with our dogs and cat, reading, playing piano, experimenting in the kitchen, fiddling with my sewing machine, or going for a swim. My favorite place is in nature: hiking, backpack camping, or kayaking. I personally have been diagnosed with ADD, though I did not receive that diagnosis until college (my mother did not believe in labels). This delayed diagnosis (and continued lack of medication) trained me to learn organization skills, creative learning styles, and how to view things in a way that made sense to my brain -- in turn, to appreciate finding how to explain things to a student so that it makes sense to their brain well. My youngest son has unique learning challenges including ADHD, dyslexia, and dysgraphia. I do not believe in allowing our challenges to control our outcomes, and will encourage students to figure out ways to meet their challenges and be victorious -- while having fun and feeling good about themselves. I originally was going to school to become a pediatric surgeon when I had a difficult pregnancy with my youngest son. I took a position as an educational interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing focusing on that career for the past ten years. Recently, I returned to school majoring in psychology. I plan to pursue psychology and, in two years, obtain a pediatric nursing degree -- returning to my previous love for the medical field while remaining working with children -- the coolest people on earth :)
